“I was reading this paper called Fungi & Sustainability – the premise was that after an asteroid impact, humans would go extinct and the world would be ruled by mushrooms, which would grow just fine in the dark. I thought… why don’t we just eat the mushrooms and not go extinct?”
In recent years, scientists in EA organizations like ALLFED, the Nucleic Acid Observatory and Open Philantropy have come up with a range of surprisingly easy ways to make humanity a lot more resilient in the face of existential desasters like a nuclear-winter-induced global agriculture collapse or an extreme pandemic caused by an accidental or deliberate release of a bioweapon.
These ideas look to be surprisingly cheap and scalable, making us excited and hopeful that we can actually make significant progress against looming threats to our civilization.
So come join us as we explore some of these ideas through short talks by group members and subsequent discussions! There will be snacks, a cozy intellectual atmosphere and plenty of opportunity to socialize with others who are excited about making the world a better place for everyone. ^^
See you there!
