AI Safety: Artificial Intelligence, Real-World Risks
🤖 AI Safety: Artificial Intelligence, Real-World Risks 🤖
Join us for our highlight event of the semester as we explore one of the most pressing challenges of our time:
ensuring artificial intelligence benefits humanity while managing existential risks.
We're excited to welcome four expert speakers:
- Tobias Thaller (Master’s student in Computational Physics) will give an introduction to AI safety
- Giulia Consonni (Founder & Podcast Host of AgorAI) will talk about superintelligence
- Martin Nissen Gonzalez (Cambridge AI Safety Hub) will dive deeper into the technical side of AI safety
- Simon Skade (Vice Chair, PauseAI Germany) will talk about current advocacy efforts and share his perspective from PauseAI
Whether you're deeply engaged with AI safety research or just beginning to explore these crucial questions, this event offers a valuable opportunity to learn, discuss, and connect with others who care about the long-term flourishing of humanity.
EA HD’s Giving Eve
Help decide where real donations go! 🎁
For our final event of the year, we're doing something special: our group members are pooling part of their year-end donations, and we'll collectively decide which effective organizations receive them.
We'll also discuss:
💸 How to talk about effective giving with family and friends over the holidays
🕯️A cozy year-in-review reflection session (back by popular demand!) - looking back on 2025 and ahead to 2026
📆 Wednesday, December 17th at 7pm
📍 Campus Bergheim, Room 28 (Bergheimer Straße 58, Heidelberg)
Surviving an Apocalypse
“I was reading this paper called Fungi & Sustainability – the premise was that after an asteroid impact, humans would go extinct and the world would be ruled by mushrooms, which would grow just fine in the dark. I thought… why don’t we just eat the mushrooms and not go extinct?”
In recent years, scientists in EA organizations like ALLFED, the Nucleic Acid Observatory and Open Philantropy have come up with a range of surprisingly easy ways to make humanity a lot more resilient in the face of existential desasters like a nuclear-winter-induced global agriculture collapse or an extreme pandemic caused by an accidental or deliberate release of a bioweapon.
These ideas look to be surprisingly cheap and scalable, making us excited and hopeful that we can actually make significant progress against looming threats to our civilization.
So come join us as we explore some of these ideas through short talks by group members and subsequent discussions! There will be snacks, a cozy intellectual atmosphere and plenty of opportunity to socialize with others who are excited about making the world a better place for everyone. ^^
See you there!
